Flagstaff Academy Middle School Students Take Top Honors at 2017 Corden Pharma Regional STEM Fair!

March 8, 2017 - (Longmont, Colorado) Flagstaff Academy, northern Colorado's
premier science and technology public prek-8th grade charter school, announces
that seven middle school students took TOP honors in the 2017 Corden Pharma
Colorado Regional Science Fair on Friday, March 3 held at Nevin Platt Middle
School. Flagstaff Academy is the only public charter school in the St. Vrain Valley
School District to place and be awarded such high honors.

The Junior Level Award Winners:
  • Caitlyn Fong (7th grade) and Prakriti KC (7th grade) - 2nd place, Engineering
  • Jacqueline Paterniti (6th Grade) - 2nd place, Energy and Transportation
  • Noah Randall (8th grade) - 1st place, Chemistry
  • Callan Teta (7th grade) - 3rd place, Engineering
  • Brielle White (8th grade) - 2nd place, Math and Computer Sciences
 
Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) Special Awards:
  • Luke Weber (6th grade) - Boulder Valley School District Science Department
    Award for science in service to the community.
  • Noah Randall (8th grade) - Broadcom MASTERS, University of Colorado
    Boulder Chemistry Department Award. The Broadcom MASTERS (Math,
    Applied Science, Technology and Engineering for Rising Stars) is the
    premier national science and engineering competition for sixth, seventh and
    eighth grade students.

 

Noah Randall will be representing Flagstaff Academy at the 62nd Colorado
Science and Engineering Fair to be held April 6-8 at the Lory Center at Colorado
State University in Fort Collins. Noah's winning project, "Biodegradable Darts,"
uses molds with gelatin, glycerin, honey, and an antibacterial that are intended to
dissolve into the ground. The Colorado State Science Fair, Inc. honors excellence
in science, technology, engineering and mathematics; providing opportunities for
students from all regions of the state to create and present their research in
environments that nurture interests in science and technology; promoting
professional skills, high ethical standards, diversity, and continuing intellectual
development.
 
Flagstaff Academy's participation in the Corden Pharma Regional STEM Fair
competition is part of the school's year-round commitment to a science and
technology-focused curriculum. The seven students were part of 14 who
participated at the regional level, and part of over 65 middle school students in
total who submitted projects as part of the school's middle school STEM Fair. "
At Flagstaff Academy, every middle school student engages in the process of
designing an experiment or an invention," says Jay Willis, 7th grade science
teacher and STEM Fair coordinator. "This process is critical to the development of
student's creativity and critical thinking skills. This year we had a record number of
projects participate in the Middle School STEM fair, and are proud of all of our
students who have worked so hard on their projects."

the Corden Pharma Regional STEM Fair, "says Katie Gustafson, Assistant
Principal, Middle School. "Their success is surpassed only by the passion they
have demonstrated in their work. It is amazing to watch students persist and fine
tune their work in the STEM Fair year after year and culminate in regional recognition."
