Making STEM an Everyday Happening in the Early Childhood Classroom

Hosted by the Colorado League of Charter Schools

Date:  Monday, June 11

Time: 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM

Location: Colorado League of Charter Schools Training Center, 4201 E. Yale Avenue, Denver

Cost: League Members: $175 for one person and $125 per additional attendee; Non-members: $225 for one person and $125 per additional attendee

Target Audience: This training is recommended for all Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten teachers, paraprofessionals, and teaching assistants.

Description: Young children enjoy exploration, experimentation, and discovery. Early Childhood Educators who are skilled at building on children’s natural curiosity enable young children to build solid content knowledge, develop higher order thinking skills, solve problems creatively, communicate effectively, and successfully collaborate with others. Classrooms that support children in developing science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) concepts help them develop the skills to successfully meet the challenges of the 21st century. Research shows that young children are capable of learning STEM concepts. This training focuses on supporting teacher’s understanding of the scientific inquiry process, how to facilitate rather than direct children’s learning, and how to plan open-ended activities to integrate STEM concepts throughout the early childhood day.

Learning Outcomes: Participants will be able to:

Describe strategies to engage children in the scientific inquiry process
Identify ways to encourage children’s mathematical thinking
Describe strategies to integrate STEM activities into the classroom
Plan open-ended activities to support STEM concepts
